Tipped:  $20 Upgraded to  SUITE LE MANS  from  RED ROOM PREMIER

My girlfriend and I book a room @ paris, checked in around 11pm so it was super late and no waiting in line to be checked in, a man looked like to be in his 40s checked us in, before he said anything I simply said “good evening sir I’m checking in” and I started a little chitchat about our roadtrip, after that he asked me for my id and cc and I had already had my sandwich in my pocket as I pulled it out I said ” do you have any upgrades available” with a big-o smile and my sandwich on the desk so he can see I mean business :> , he typed away for a minute or two and BAM he said “will a suite le mans be ok?” I couldn’t bealive it and said “yes of course” gave me my keys and off we went!! I was really nervous when asking for the upgrade as this was my 1st time going to vegas and I’m not the type of person to ask for discounts/free things but I didn’t it anyways and I’m glad I did!!

Tipped:  $20 Upgraded to  executive red room, renovated, 29th floor  from  regular

We arrived at the hotel a little after two o’clock, and we were excited to try the $20 trick. None of the people behind the desk seemed particularly great to “target,” and I was a little worried by the fact that we had to wait in a short line. When it was our turn, my fiance handed over his players card, his id, and his cc with the twenty in there. The guy behind the desk took it out, let it fall to the desk, and said, “Put this away. There are cameras.” and he nodded over his shoulder. The twenty remained in sight, though, and he started clicking away. When he asked if we had a preference for smoking or non, I replied, “Whatever you have that is the best.” We chatted lightly as he clicked away.

Now here’s the thing. We have a friend who lives out there, and who works at the Rio, so he has an employee card. He appeared out of nowhere and flashed it to the receptionist, who clicked a few more keys and then gave us our room keys. My fiance swears it was the twenty (which the guy did take in a handshake) and our friend swears it was his card. Personally, I’m glad that one of the two did the magic; we ended up on the 29th floor with a view of the Bellagio fountains in a red room, which was exactly what I wanted!

I say, go for it–a little awkwardness and $20 is worth it, and the man behind the desk didn’t seem surprised by the offer at all.

Good luck!

Tipped:  $20 Upgraded to  Private Double Window Strip View  from  Standard

I was a little nervous at first, but decided to try. Super busy at check-in hoping for the best. No managers were around so that made it easier. A lady in her 40’s asked me to come to her counter. I told her my name and she checked my reservation. I then asked her if any room upgrades were available. She said yes but they cost 40 to 60 dollars per night. I then gave her my CC and DL with $20 in between. She still begin to go through all the upgrade options and their prices. I don’t think she caught on at first, then I said I don’t think so. She then saw the $20 and said hold on, let me check. Sure enough, she found several upgrades which were called “P” rooms. They are bigger than the standard room and a lot nicer. I double checked before I walked away and asked if I was charged for an upgrade. She smiled and said no you were not, enjoy your room. It was a super room compared to the standard, I know because that is what my sister got. I stayed 4 nights in an upgraded room all for 20 bucks. Best value in Vegas. Thanks for the tip!!

Tipped:  $20 Upgraded to  Strip front, corner room  from  basic

Had my room comped through Harrah’s Total Rewards club for four nights — but only a basic, mountain-facing view.
When we got in midday on a Saturday (not busy at all), I handed the clerk my very first $20 sammy. (my wife, by the way, humiliated and nervous about it all of this. I figured: what the hell?) the clerk smiled widely when she saw the 20, immediately offered to move us to the strip, facing the bellagio fountains — and then even asked, if we didn’t mind waiting an hour … so we could get a corner room with BOTH windows facing different directions on the strip. Jackpot!

Tipped:  $20 Upgraded to  red room  from  regular room

Got to the hotel around 11:00 at night, only a few people in line a young guy at the end opened up which was a great sign. I handing him the sandwich and asked if there were any complementary upgrades and he said what are you looking for, is a red room OK. I said a red room would be great as I had read that those rooms were recently upgraded. He said he couldn’t get a strip view but could do the red room. I said that was no problem and we were on the 30th floor in a corner room. Worked like a charm

Tipped:  $50 Upgraded to  Calais Suite  from  Red Room Luxury

Arrived to Paris around 11:30 pm on a Thursday. I had 4 nights comped through Total Rewards in a Red Room. I targeted a woman in her late 30’s to early 40’s. Handed her my id and credit card with $50. She proceeded to place the $50 near the top right corner of the keyboard. I made some small talk, then asked politely if there were any complimentary upgrades available as I was meeting my long-distance g/f (true). She began to type away and asked if a suite would be ok. I said sure and she told me the room normally goes for $850/night but I had arrived at a good time. I thanked her and went to the 10th floor. She put me right in the middle of the hotel with a PERFECT view of the Eiffel Tower and pool.
$50 for an $850/night room! The room was around 1000 sq. ft. and had 2 bathrooms.
Look, this was my first time trying the sandwich and I will try every time I go now.

Tipped:  $20 Upgraded to  Premier room with strip view  from  Luxury guest room

The desk clerk received my card and ID sandwich. She knew instantly what was up and said “ooh la la, what can I do for you?” I said whatever you can do to make my stay a good one. She said, would you like a view or red room? I said I prefer a view, but a red room would be nice too. She looked for quite a bit and made some calls. She said she was coming up with nothing because I was leaving on a Saturday and all the rooms were booked then. She then said she had a 12th floor view, but she wished she could have done better because I wouldn’t be able to see the fountain very well. Well, she was right, but it is an upgrade. She thanked me for being so generous and wished that she could have done better.

I tried to get an upgrade with the sandwich trick and I was told that management was aware of the tips.com website and individuals names were being used and it was causing people to get in trouble so she could’t offer me an upgrade!!!! Why are you guys describing the people that upgrade you and giving their names???? Don’t kick a gift horse in the mouth!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
