Tipped:  $20 Upgraded to  None  from  Standard - King N/S

Checked into Gold Coast on Monday, 06/01/09 at about 4:30 PM. Showed the $20.00 when preseent ing credit card & ID. Clerk made small talk & i asked, “Are you busy today?” She replied, “We’re really slow.” So I asked if there was an upgrade available. She promptly replied, “No. We’re booked.” Not only did we not get upgrade – we didn’t get the king bed we had reserved! We called the front desk promptly, and my wife was blown off immediately with a “Call the front desk tomorrow.” response. We went to the front desk in the morning and were moved to an older, not remodeled room.

Tipped:  $20 Upgraded to  two room suite  from  standard delux

Checked in early, about 11.30AM. While holding the $20 bill in my hand, I asked if there were and complimentry upgrades. The male clerk looked around the computer for a while and said “will a two room suite on the top floor do.” I smiled and said “that will do just fine.” When I got the paper work and keys, I then handed him the $20 bill and said “thank you very much.”

Was told by the young lady that she could not upgrade me because my stay was too long (4 consecutive nights).

Tipped:  $50 Upgraded to  nothing  from  standard

Handed the clerk 50 asking if there were any upgrades available. She said there is nothing they can do anymore with the new computer system, everything is tracked and they are not happy about that either. Stuck with the same room unless I wanted to pay the additional upgrade fee.

Tipped:  $20 Upgraded to  one bedroom suite - 10th floor  from  two double beds

Went to check in with the credit card, license and $20 bill folded between. Clerk handed me back the $20 which I kept on the counter. She started to check me in and I asked if any upgrades where available. She told me she would upgrade me to a one bedroom suite and I told her thank you and handed her the $20, which she took. The room and stay where great!

Tipped:  $20 Upgraded to  Standard King /w View  from  Standard King

Room was still a standard king bed, but was near top floor (7th of 9), with a “Strip” view to the southeast, and it was a newly refurbished room. However, the real “upgrade” was that I was given coupons for three meals per day at the Gold Coast buffet for my entire 8 day stay, as well as being given an extra Gold Coast coupon book.
How It Happened: Arrived at hotel at about noon and was first in line for check-in. Made friendly chit-chat with clerk when she called me forward. As I handed her my ID and credit card with $20 bill folded in-between before she asked for them, I commented that I hoped she could find me a really nice room even though I was checking-in early. When she noticed the $20 bill she was surprised and said, “Ohhhh! Yes sir, I’ll see what I can find for you.” After several key-strokes, she told me that because of the length of my stay she could not give me a complimentary upgrade to a suite but that she would put me on a high floor, in a newly renovated room with a nice view, and then asked me if I would like to have all my meals comped. I readily agreed and she provided me eight coupons each for breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as two of the standard Gold Coast guest coupon books.

Tipped:  $20 Upgraded to  Standard Room /w View  from  Standard Room

To be clear, I never did directly ask for a suite or anything else specific other than that he please set me up so I did not have to check in and out for each of my three separate, overlapping reservations. Since this was an involved check-in, I was not going to push my luck. In the end I was given a room on the 7th floor with a great view of the Palms and the south Strip, a free fridge and extra funbooks. I did not have to check out and then back in at any point and my room card worked the entire time (no visits to the front desk for help) which is all I really wanted. The clerk asked me if there was “anything else he could do for me” after spending about 10 minutes going over hotel and restaurant info with me. If he had not already prepared my room cards at that point I would have asked for a suite…but as far as I know the entire place was sold out for Sunday night anyway. Considering I paid $50 total for all five nights I cannot complain. $20 well spent IMHO.

EDIT: Just a tip…this hotel only has standard rooms and suites, nothing in between. Also, there are only 10 or 12 suites total, so I would assume one’s chances are slim for an upgrade for a weekend stay or an otherwise long stay.
