stayed 10 days tipped $100 and got upgraded to the d suite corer hugest floor
I approached the young lady at the far end of the check in desk, handed over my $20 sandwich, made some small talk, then asked if there were any complementary room upgrades available. She told me she could move me up to a King Deluxe room for an additional $15 per night. I told her I had booked a King Deluxe. She told me their system had me down for a Dual Queen Deluxe. I questioned a bit more, then reluctantly accepted. I did not get my $20 back even though the service I tipped for did not occur. I called the front desk the next morning and explained the situation. The supervisor apologized and waived the upgrade fee.
Had booked just a regular room for three nights. Showed up kinda late and walked right up to the desk. Held the bill($50) in my hand and asked if a nice room was available. He told me I would be happy with the room and I gave him the money. I was happy as it was a suite at the end of the hall. Big living room, bar, dining room area. Wrap around windows looking out at Fremont Street. Nice Bedroom, jacuzzi tub, real nice. Totally worth it since the room was dirt cheap to start with.
I was staying a week and was booked through America West Airlines Vacations. Thus it was a pretty cheap way to go. Because I was staying a week, I thought I might try the 20 dollar trick. But, because I was staying with some buddies, I upped the ante and thought $100.00 would help.
I tried twice with 2 different clerks. I even told the guy that I had 100 good reasons why he might want to upgrade me. The money was in plain sight, but still no luck. I did not surrender the money so I guess it was a good gamble.
