While historically GREAT for the sandwhich trick; This hotel ( Now the LVH) is being run by a bank receiver. NO “Comp” ie. sandwich upgrades will be accepted. PAID Upgrades they offer at check in will continue. This is verbatum per Joanne the day manager
We didn’t target any clerk. We got a nice blonde woman in her mid 20’s and she was very nice. We gave her the “tip” and she upgraded us to Premium with a view, flat screen, pillow top/down mattresses and a fridge! Beautiful room! plus 4 free drinks to be redeemed at the bar! We also got a free late checkout at 2pm!
Totally worth our $20!
Thursday check in, crowded 3:00 pm. Had two standard rooms booked on slot special packages for 3 nights each. Gal didn’t flinch and upgraded my rooms to nice 600 sq. ft. Grand Rooms connecting facing the strip in north tower. What a deal, $3.33 per night more per room. I’ve been going to Vegas for 35 yrs. and this will be done every time from now on.
I had read about the $20 trick on a website and surely wanted to try this thing out. It was on a Friday Afternoon @ around 3:40 PM, there was a big crowd around the check in counter. I was helped by an Asian lady, who asked for my last name to pull up my details. When asked for my ID and CC, I sandwiched the $20 bill between the two cards. I then asked for the complimentary upgrade, she smiled, thanked me and upgraded me to the Grand Room with Strip View.
SCORE! My wife is VIP so we checked in W/O tip. Room was for my son and his G/F (her birthday). They wanted a tub so we went back to the same girl in VIP at about six P.M.We only asked for a room with a tub ($20 inserted btw cards) . She gave us a jacuzzi tub mini suite in the North Tower with a view of the Strip!!! She said she might as well give it to us, rather than somebody else!
Read about the $20 upgrade thing. Decided to arrive in Vegas 2 days before we planned to.
Got on the phone and booked a standard room for $69 for 2 nights.
On checking in went to lady with £20 in my passport.
Asked if there were any comp upgrades available. Put us in a 600 Sq foot Grand Room that was $199 that night. FANTASTIC TIP!!
Will do it again for sure.
I checked in about 1PM on a Thursday afternoon. The front desk was quiet and one of the young men behind the desk waved me over. He was about 25-30 years old and asked me for my last name to look up the reservation.
I had booked a 3 night package, with air, through US Air Vacations, so I wasn’t sure if that type of reservation was “upgradeable” but figured why not give it a shot.
So as he acknowledged my three night reservation, I casually asked “Are there any complimentary upgrades available?” His eyes were on his computer screen as he replied “i’m sorry sir, the only upgrades we have available right now are paid upgrades”. Just then, he looked up and saw the twenty between my license and credit card and his reaction was palpable. “Ohhhh……., well let me see what I can do sir” was his response with a big smile. He said he had a recently renovated Grand room available with a Strip view on the 15th floor available and I said that sounded great. And it was! These rooms are about 600 square feet, have a sofa, coffee table, comfortable chair with ottoman, refigerator, two walk in closets, very comfortable beds, a work desk with acomfortable work chair and to top it off, Hilton has a deal that if you don’t have maid service done that day you get a $10.00 voucher to use in any of their food establishments. So I did that as well and recouped my twenty!
Folded 20 as suggested and got a great room upgrade to one of the newly remodeled rooms.
Checked in around noon. Hubby was hesitant about using the sandwich so I grabbed his ID and CC and stuck $20, slid it to the clerk and said the magic words “do you have any complimentary upgrades available?” She saw the $20, slipped it under her keyboard and typed away. Disappeared to the back and came back with coupons & our key. Hubby was still not convinced anything got upgraded. Went to room…shazam! 650 sq ft with a sitting area, plasma tv in the newly renovated tower! I enjoy being right almost as much as I enjoy being upgraded! 🙂
Came in at 12AM, slipped the $50 between CC/DL, and the clerk said you want a suite? I said yes, but I asked specifically for their North Tower 2 bedroom suite. She said she’d have to try to get that one for me, and slipped away for 5-7 mins in the back, only to come back to tell me she couldn’t do that one. After some pushing and more trying I ended up with a Lanai Suite with an OK strip view. First time saying at LV Hilton, and it’s not bad for the price I had it at; the hotel was pretty much smoke free, Craps table was decent, but all-in-all the people I went with had FUN. Well worth the tip although it was more than the standard $20, and I didn’t get the room I wanted…still got a decent suite!
