Tipped:  $20 Upgraded to    from  Standard room

Checked in on a Thursday evening around 7:00 PM. I handed the $20 to the clerk with my drivers license and credit card. He said, “Oh, do you need change?” I told him no and asked if he had any complimentary room upgrades. He laughed and said “Upgrades aren’t free here, upgrades are something you pay for.” He checked me in and I got the crappiest room ever. I will never stay at this hotel again. It gives me the creeps just to think about how crappy the rooms are here.

Tipped:  $20 Upgraded to  strip view top floor  from  std room

I checked in early , and asked for any comp room upgrades while sliding my cc and DL to her. she said let me check, and just like that had a room that wasnt next to the parking garage that looks like a motel. Strip view top floor nothing special since this an older hotel but worth the $20 to get out of the dump we whould have been put in.

Tipped:  $20 Upgraded to  Spa Suite  from  Cheapest crappy room

IP was swamped, waited in line for a good 30 minutes before we got a clerk. I was worried that being so crowded, the tip might not fly.

Wrong! Clerk very discreetly took my $20 and winked. I got the message, but just to clarify I softly asked if there were any complimentary upgrades available.

He smiled and replied “Lots” and proceeded to book us into a suite with spa tub. In addition, he comped us 4 buffets (eww) and 4 tickets to the auto show (cool!). Gave us some fitness room passes as well.

So we essentially had 5 nights in a spa suite and a total blast on the strip for less than $40 a night.

Tipped:  $20 Upgraded to  Suite with King bed and large tub  from  Basic King bed

The clerk was great, she upgraded no questions asked! The room itself was not that impressive. This was definitely an older room and we had to walk what seemed like 1/4 of a mile through 3-4 different hallways to get to the room. The view of the pools from the room was nice.
Just a word of advice on this hotel….YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR. If you have the extra cash, stay away from this place. The rooms that aren’t remodeled are just horrible, half the elevators were not working and the ones that did work were completely full, and the layout of the building was just awful.

Tipped:  $20 Upgraded to  PENTHOUSE  from  Cheapest room available ( AAA deal 4 night for $300 )

I read about the 20 dollar trick on this web site. I decided to try it when my friend and I stayed at The Imperial Place for a Wedding in Vegas for 4 nights. We are two girls in our mid twenties. I was a little hesitant, because the front desk clerk I got was an older woman ( I knew I could weasel a man, but a woman? ) I slipped her the 20 in the sandwich. She was very pleased when she saw it, and became really quiet and you could tell she was trying to be sneaky around her manager. I was honestly hoping for a jacuzzi sweet, but oh no – SHE GAVE US THE PENTHOUSE!! It was bigger than my apartment. We had a huge balcany with sun beds, a huge bedroom, a bar, a dining table, a living room, and a bathroom with a giant jacuzzi and a huge vanity. It was amazing, all for an extra $20. We originally paid $300 for 4 nights. I know thsi room cost way more than that for one night! I will say though, that 3 of my other girls checked in the next day, and tried the 20 trick, and got nothing.

Tipped:  $0 Upgraded to  Deluxe @ The Flamingo  from  Deluxe @ The Imperial Palace

My fiance, Marleen, mentioned this website & trick to me before getting to Vegas. It immediately made sense to me. The check-in reps for the hotel get an hourly wage, if they can make an extra buck here or there, why not, if there’s availability in the hotel. Higher-end rooms will sometimes go to waste if this ‘trick’ didn’t exist. Hopefully this website doesn’t increase supervision of the hotel clerk’s. So we get to the Imperial Palace and while waiting in line, I have a $20 bill under my driver’s license. I practice what I would say in my head, “Hi, we just got engaged in November and couldn’t get away until now. Are there any complimentary upgrades in rooms?” while I would hand the clerk the 20 spot and ID without the clerk getting caught by the ‘eye in the sky’. Because it was a male clerk, I handed him my ID, giving him the same line. He responded with, “I’m sorry sir, we’re all booked up.” We told him we would like a room away from the Harrah’s noise. He said, “Let me see what I can do.” He left for a couple minutes and returned with a document and handed it to me. He told me he could upgrade us to the Flamingo, which he assured us was much nicer. The difference in cost for the same room was $100. We get to the Flamingo and had to wait a little in line before we got help. We gave the clerk (male again) the same line as we did to the clerk at Imperial Palace. He said, “Let me see what I can do.” At first he was willing to give us a room on the TOP FLOOR! Then Marleen asked, “Could we have a room facing the strip?” He told us he couldn’t place us on the top floor, but that he could give us a room facing the strip on the 14th floor. We took it at no extra cost. $100 upgrade AND facing the strip! We got to our room and could see Caeser’s Palace & The Belaggio (water show) from our room. [Harrah’s owns many hotels in the area which explains the document given to us to comp us] The moral of the story is ladies and gentlemen, you never know until you ask, and we didn’t use ANY MONEY whatsoever for the upgrade.
