This was my first time using the $20 sandwich trick. I didn’t target any specific clerk, just went random. Handed my folded $20 with my drivers license and credit card, and asked, “Do you have any free Rom upgrades?” Within two minutes the clerk upgraded us to the King Suite from a Deluxe room. Tip, ask, and you shall recieve!
This was my first time using this trick. It was 6/18/11, Saturday, 3:30pm. Front Desk name was a caucasion male, between 25-30. I didn’t target this person. I wanted to test this trick random. Gave the sandwiched $20 between my DL & CC, and asked, “You have any free room upgrades?” Within two minutes he gave me the King Suite, which is two upgrades from my original room of a Deluxe. If he said no, and took my tip, I wouldn’t have thrown a fit. It would’ve been added to my gambling loss for that trip. I’d do it again and again! Just give it a try.
I checked in around 2pm when there was a lot of ppl waiting. As soon as the lady saw the $20 sanwich, she said there is no free upgrade, upgrade is available at $30/night. I came back 2h later, got another woman who looks nicer, however, I had no luck either. It seems they are pretty strict about upgrades recently, or I am just not that lucky.
older male, beside a younger female. looked like he wanted to upgrade me but couldnt for whatever reason. later found out the hotel had been oversold that night. he offered me a strip view “noisy” room or a quieter room without view. opted for the quieter room.
So we checked in late around 10:00pm and noticed that all the clerks were female. Fortunately (I thought), the VIP line was empty and the clerk who called me up was a middle aged Asian male. I thought I scored since I’ve heard that males were more likely to be more lenient with upgrades, but was I wrong. I made some small talk and when he asked me for my ID/CC, I flashed the 20 very obviously and asked him if there was any complimentary upgrades available. He didn’t even give me a chance and said that there were none. Very obvious again (flashing the 20 some more) I asked him again if there was anything else he could do, by that point the manager asked me the question and I told her. No luck. I don’t think I’d ever stay here again since it is a cheap roach motel anyways and the Capri building is like going to Iraq with the noise and break-ins and such.
My wife and I arrived at 7.30pm, midweek, and there was no-one else queueing. As we were staying for 14 nights, we upped the sandwich filling to a $100 note, which we prominently displayed, or so we thought, sticking out of my passport!
We dropped several hints we’d like a room with a lot of space, but not a Luv-Tub room and pointed at the $100 note a couple of times and said that’s for you if you can help us.Somehow, she didn’t notice the money, but said she’d given us a high-floor room with a Strip view. When she eventually realised her tip, she thanked us profusely and gave us 2 free comp breakfast buffets and 2 free comp dinner buffets, worth $60 total.
However, when we got to this room it was small, very noisy due to the rock club downstairs and worst of all the room hadn’t been cleaned!!
We called her and she immediately had us transferred to a mini-suite with separate lounge, 2 tv’s and a lot of space! In all, between what we paid Expedia, the sandwich and taking the comp buffets into account, we paid around $27 per night for a mini-suite!! Give it a try, it is well worth it, they can only say no!
We really just went to the next available clerk and while she was pulling up our information we put a $20 bill down and asked if there were any complimentary upgrades. It was about 5pm on black friday, it worked on a holiday weekend!
Arrived right before noon, female clerk,
I sandwiched a 20$ with my CC+ID. She gave me coupons and ask me to come back in a hour or so in order to have the room ready. I got a nice junior suite, with separate bedroom and 2 balconies. This was midweek ,but 20$ extra for 3 nights upgrade was g8 🙂
Well we checked in about Midnight and there was 3 people working and a line about 50 people long slipped the lady a 20 with id and Orbitz paper and she instatly handed it back to me. I said that is for you and then asked if there were any udgrades avaiable and she said yes for 20 bucks a night. So i asked for a room with a strip view so she gave me that. but i didnt not give her the 20 bucks. It worked at the Excalibur back in January oh well i am going back in 6 more month..
Our flight to Vegas was delayed three hours, so we didn’t arrive at the hotel until about 1:30 AM. By then, there were only two females working the front desk. We had originally booked two rooms for 7 people total, but we each sandwiched $20 and were upgraded to a 2 bedroom penthouse with connecting living room/bar. For IP, this is not bad at all! And to think, the rooms were comped to begin with!
