I checked in at around 10:30 pm. The lobby seemed pretty slow. I made conversation with the lady at the desk and slipped her my CC and DL with the 20 in between. I asked if there were any comp room upgrades available. She said that they didn’t do that anymore but she can try to get me the best room available. She put me on the 30th floor on the mountain view side for the first night and said that she could give me a strip view on the 30th floor in a room right across the hall from my first room for the next two nights. I said great and that it would do. She thanked me and gave me the keys and I was on my way. Don’t know if I could have had the same luck without the 20. The room was a standard size room and the view was so so of the strip and the construction. The windows were pretty dirty.
Watched an extremely drunk guy in front of us SCREAMING at the clerk and her incompetence! Turns out, he was actually booked at Harrahs! When we got up to the clerk we were very apologetic to her and tried to crack a few jokes to cheer her up. Handed $20 between the CC and DL and asked if she could upgrade us to a higher floor. She called over her manager, and I thought I was gonna get in trouble for “bribing” her. She told him how we were the reason she wasn’t going to walk away from the job. HE upgraded us to the 39th floor and told us to keep the $20. We got a special access key for the elevator. As you step out, TWO private concierges approach to ask if you want anything. Room was not a suite, but VERY large, strip view, the most comfortable bedding I’ve ever slept in. The robes and slippers were a nice touch. The greatest part though, was ANOTHER special access key to a private lounge on the floor. All the premium booze and great food you could consume while watching a big screen television. Open from 8am to 11 pm, and everything at NO CHARGE!!! SUCCESS!!
Checked in around noon, slipped him the $20 with the license and CC, and asked if there were any comp upgrades available. Said they just had several upper floor suites that just came available. When I asked him what the rooms were like, he said, “The room is smokin”
put the $20 between the cc n the license, asked the young lady is there any complimentary upgrade. smiled n shook her head n say they don’t offer any complimentary upgrades. she put us on the 27th floor w/o taking the tip n rooms werent tat bad tho.
I tried the $20 trick thinking it made sense that a clerk would upgrade you (especially in December when it’s not busy). No luck. She saw the $20, said they had upgrades available for $x per night, etc. etc. She did give us a discounted rate for the upgrades (which the next night we took since the basic room SUCKS). I will never stay here again- construction starting at 6 or 7 am, you could smell the smoking rooms (ours was NS), and also could hear what everyone around you was doing. Not the way I want to wake up after a long day and night of partying.
Look elsewhere.
I will never stay at the Monte Carlo again. The rooms are falling apart. I paid $100 a night to upgrade and felt ripped off. The $20 did not work at all. The whole stay was very disappointing.
There were about 10 or so workers, and the lines for each werent that long. So i decided to look around and see who would give me the best chance at an upgrade. I decided to try the 20 dollar trick at this younger male. I had the $20 bill in between the cc and license, suckered up to him by asking how his day was going and so on..then, i asked if there were any nice rooms available. He said there was a room with a view that i could get, but i have to wait a day…so i would have a temp room for one night..i agreed… The first room was on the 27th floor, and had the view of the mgm/new york new york side of the strip (it wasnt too bad)..the next night (which was the better room) we had to move to the 17th floor. The view wasnt great at all. We had the view of the other side of the strip, but there were a lot of construction that blocked the view. Plus, the windows were VERY dirty! Also, they were doing construction downstairs in the casino and it stunk!..I would not recommend this hotel to anyone, and this would be the last hotel I stay at the next time i come back to vegas.
Showed the 20 bucks to the clerk, but he told me right away, that they do not offer any upgrades and I took back my money.
Clerk took a look at the 20.00. I asked if the hotel was busy and inquired if any comped upgrades were available. She said no. There was what looked like a supervisor pacing back and forth behind the counter.
Offered $20 tip, and was offered upgrade at $95/night. Declined. Tried again at service desk. Showed the $20, but the problem apparently was that this was a 5 night stay, with two rooms. Clerk REALLY wanted the $20, and came back with an offer to upgrade one room to a suite with an adjoining standard room for $20/night. Seemed like a pretty good deal, and I took it.
