We were to LV for a convention so a very basic room was covered. We got in 14 hours late (Jet Blue didn’t assign me a seat, just my husband so we bounced around the east coast first) very tired & bedraggled we went to the clerk, explained our delay & asked how much an upgrade would cost, it was about $45, we happily took it, at the last second he said ‘I think you’ll like the room’. It was absolutely gorgeous, bathroom w/a jacuzzi, a dressing room, sitting area, plasma tv, basket of fruit etc. Clearly he went beyond the $45 ‘slightly better room, as we’re at capacity’ I went down to thank him & he refused my tip, we had a great 5 days & we barely gambled!
CHECKED IN ABOOUT 6PM, HAD THE $20 BETWEEN CC AND ID. ASKED IF SHE HAD COMPLIMENTARY UPGRADES AVAILABLE. WORKED LIKE A CHARM
I think im such a loser. i was a bit nervous about doing it. i walked up, checked in. i had my cc and dl and $20 in between ready to go. Just about when i was asking for an upgrade, she asked if i want to upgrand my room for $89 a night, i told her no and she begin to type stuff into the computer. so i asked her, if there was any free upgrades, she replied with no. and then i thought it was all done with. walked away, and just remembered i didnt even show her my $20. =O
I walked in and the clerk was a japanese male who had a lisp so I looked him in the eye and smiled and as I passed him the 20 I asked if there was a room that I could go get that was better so i could invite the clerk and his other japanese friends up to use me later that night. Sure enough it worked, I love vegas and after that trip I love asian men.
I checked in at roughly 4am, it was so late they actually charged my card for a cancellation. My other 2 nights were free though, so that wasn’t an issue. In any case, I asked if they had upgrades, she said yes…but they would be $$/per night. I asked if there were any comp’d upgrades and she didn’t hook it up. She DID give me my $20 back though…and I gave her a 5 spot for trying.
Just came back from Vegas this weekend. Checked in at Paris around 8pm. Had the room comp’d for three nites. Spotted a young hotel receptionist. Think her name was Christin* something. Handed her my id. Specifically asked her if there were any ‘complimentary upgrades available’? She answered ‘of course’! Slipped her the $20 under my cc. She gave me a big smile, pocketed it and said thank you. Next…she hands me a sheet of upgrade prices. I was like… HUH?!!! Then politely sked her if she could hook me up with any better prices. She calls over her manager and he said the best they could do was knock off $15 per nite of an upgrade due to my level of play. Anyways, I just said no thank you and got a regular room with a crappy view. Girl didn’t even hand me the $20 back. I guess a newbie rep. Oh wells, I shouldn’t complain so much since the room was free. Last time I tried this trick at Caesars Palace and got the comp’d room upgraded to the Augusta tower, perfect view of the strip and a bottle of champagne sent up to the room. That suite rocks!!! Yep, lost my first $20 bet/hand at the check-in table.
I was traveling with two other couples, all three of us staying at MGM, and all got upgraded to Suites by the same clerk. All tipped him $20.
I reserved a regular room for free that I acquired thorugh comps. Worked even with the free room. Was moved up to a suite with no problems. Did not have to even say a word. Clerk new the exact intention of the $20. Very nice room.
I was in Vegas last weekend, April 20-23 at the Paris. I’d booked a standard room with the best rate plus guarantee program. Everything was sold out for the weekend, so I wasn’t optimistic about getting a suite, but thought I’d at least try for a view of the Bellagio fountains which is usually a $40/night upgrade.
I checked in at the airport and tipped the guy $20, asking if he had anything available with a view of the strip. He hammered away hard at the keyboard for about 4 or 5 minutes and finally found something on the 24th floor that was free for all 3 nights. It was in a great spot near the elevators with a great view of the fountains and he was very appreciative of the tip. In fact, he also threw in a free dinner comp which we used.
It was $20 very well spent.
Just got back from my trip (April 9-14). Went up to the Paris front desk and was asked if I would like to upgrade to a strip view for $65 more a night. I said… “not really” and she then said ok and asked for my driver’s license. I put the folded $20 under the license and she took her time looking at it and then put what was under it next to her. She then changed her tone and started looking for rooms. I asked for a Suite Lemans but she said it couldn’t be done because of how long I was staying. She said more than 2 nights and they would have to charge me. She upgraded me to a P room which was larger than the normal rooms with a strip view from two sets of windows. Great room and worth $20.
Just got back from Vegas with my girlfriend. Stayed at Paris Sun to Thur. Rates were $90, $160, $160, $160. Was the best I could do on short notice (booked about 8 days before the trip). Got an offer 3 days before my trip from Excalibur for $60 a night but decided against it, Paris is my favourite hotel of the ones I’ve stayed in (Bellagio, Venetian, Caesars are the others).
Checked in around 11:30pm. Went up and did the $20 trick and asked if any upgrades were available. She asked me what I had in mind. I decided against being greedy and just asked for a view. She said no problem. Gave us a room on the 2nd highest floor. I forgot to ask for 1 bed so when we got up there, it was of course 2 beds. Went back down and asked her for 1 king. She told me none were available so I told her it was ok, thanks for trying. She asked me to wait a sec and asked if it was ok if she gave me a suite for 1 night and we switch to the fountain view room for the other 3 nights. I said no problem. The LeMans suite was nice. Had a seperate powder room and walk in closet. The bathroom had a shower, double sink and jacuzzi and it’s own separate room for the toilet and bidet.
Next time I’ll be a bit greedier and ask for one of those double door Calais suites.
The regular room was nice as usual with a sweet view of the Eiffel Tower and Bellagio Fountain show. All in all, it was well worth the $20. The check in woman was very nice and polite and thanked me for the tip and her extra effort to get us a suite for the first night was awesome.
Only bad part of the trip was I finished 4th in a poker tournament and only top 3 paid… arghhhh.
