Tipped:  $100 Upgraded to    from  regular

I went to the next available clerk and placed $70 between cc and dl and asked for the Lago Media room w/ pool table.

Immediately was told they cannot upgrade to that room due to the price and that people have been fired for doing it.

Tipped:  $20 Upgraded to  Palazzo Bella  from  Palazzo Luxury

My friend and I checked in around noon and included a $20 bill with our credit card. The agent asked if we needed change but we told him that was for him. We asked for twin beds and a room as nice as possible.

We did receive a room with twin beds for the two nights we stayed there, this would have cost $30 per night so we did save some money. However, although this was technically an upgrade it was the same room type and no view was offered. We were on the 42nd floor.

Tipped:  $50 Upgraded to  Palazzo Luxury View Suite  from  Palazzo Luxury Suite

We checked in on Sunday of Labor Day weekend with a $50 dollar sandwich. I don’t think the girl behind the counter knew what to do with it. She made no attempt at an upgrade until asking, at which point we were moved to a Strip view suite. After pressing some more, we scored 5 days of spa passes, 2 entries to Madame Tussaud’s, and an additional $15 in slot credit (we already had $35 from our package). Overall, the upgrade for the room would have been $210 over the 7 days + all the freebies = a pretty decent deal. I’m glad we pushed the clerk for more so that would be my tip for anyone attempting this. It can’t hurt to ask…

Tipped:  $50 Upgraded to  Palazzo suite 2-Queens on 46th floor w/ view  from  Cheapest Standard 1-King suite at Venetian

I had booked four nights at the Venetian for Labor Day Weekend Thurs-Mon. I booked the cheapest room I could find on the Venetian website which only included 1 king size bed and a couch pullout.

This was my first time trying the “sandwich”. Since it was Labor Day weekend and were staying 4 nights instead of my normal 2 nights weekend in Vegas, I decided to play it safe. We arrived at the Venetian at about 2pm on Thursday.

I walked up to the next available clerk, a woman in her mid twenties early thirties. I handed her the sandwich with a $50 folded in half between my ID and credit card and asked if there were any complimentary upgrades available. She was sly about taking the sandwich and put the $50 in a hidden corner of her desk while saying she would check. I mentioned that I needed something with two queens.

We conversed for a little until I asked her if she could give me a Rialto Suite for me or something nicer as we were also there for a birthday celebration. After a few seconds of typing, she informed me the Rialtos were “locked out” for the weekend. But she would be able to give me either a renovated suite in the Venezia Tower or something in the Palazzo. I immediately opted for the Palazzo since I’ve stayed at both hotels and I feel the Palazzo is a small step above the Venetian. She then offered me the choice of the 22nd floor with strip view or 46th floor with strip view. She informed me that the 22nd would offer a closer view of the strip, but I decided to take the 46th thinking higher was more “ballin”. This ended up being a little annoying since there were so many elevator stops to get to and from our suite. But the view at night was AMAZING.

She also gave me a small coupon book with a line pass for LAVO, and a discount at Dos Caminos (where they ended up comping our entire $160 meal after we mentioned that our order was messed up). We were given 5 room keys, no questions asked, and a 3pm check out time for in case we “partied too hard Sunday night”, which we did.

Before giving me my paperwork, she mentioned that she matched my Saturday night rate to my Friday night rate. At the time, I thought that she just moved things around to make the upgrade transparent to my invoice. Today I check my e-mail after checking out and realize she actually lowered my Saturday night rate by $60.

As I took my paperwork and we began to walk towards the Palazzo, she asked me “Is this for me to keep?” referring to the $50. I supposed I could have said no, but of course I answered with a smiling “Yes. Thanks for your help.”

In all, the $50 I tipped actually ended up saving me $10 overall on the hotel and got us the upgrade we wanted. I will definitely be using this trick again next time!

Tipped:  $20 Upgraded to  Luxury View  from  Luxury Suite

Checked in at “Invited Guest Check-in” as per our reservation, approached very friendly clerk and waited to see if he would upgrade our reservation without the sandwich (he didn’t), he requested my ID and gave him a $20 dollar sandwich and asked if there was anything he could do. He took the sandwich and said he could update the room view (normally an additional $45 per night) and also gave us $40 casino credit, free cocktails, money off food etc. Very happy!

Got to Palazzo late around 11:30 pm on 8/19, staying for 3 nights. There was no one at all in line, but 2 others guests already at the counter. I was directed over to the Invited Guests counter (even though I wasn’t), where a young lady helped me. It was very empty and there was no one around us. I gave her the sandwich and she immediately smiled and said “thank you!”. I asked if there were any rooms available with 2 beds and a great view… and she said definitely. Typed away at the computer for a minute and told me she has a room on the 42nd floor overlooking the pool and strip. I gave her the thumbs up. I also asked for late checkout, and she said she put a note on there for 1 pm (vs 11 am), but when I called front desk a few days later, they said they couldn’t do a complimentary late checkout. I pushed some more, and they offered 12 pm checkout which was ok with me. Overall great experience and would do it again at the Palazzo!

Tipped:  $50 Upgraded to  Luxury King -- Strip View  from  Luxury King -- No View

Arrived on a Thursday at 7:00 p.m for a 4-night stay with my wife. Only waited for one person ahead of us, and was directed to the next available clerk, a female about upper 20s. Placed the sandwich with $50 on the counter, told her I was there with my wife for our 10th anniversary and my 40th birthday (both true) and asked if there were any complimentary upgrades available. I also mentioned that I heard great things about the Siena suites and asked if one of those would be possible (didn’t expect to get one, but I figured I’d shoot high). She went back to “speak with the manager” and when she came back she said that they were very booked, that they were able to find a Siena suite but that it would be $125 per night. I responded that I was looking for something complimentary, and she said that the only thing she could offer complimentary was a high floor strip view. For $20 I would have been fine, but for $50 I was looking for more. So I switched gears and asked about the resort package, which includes passports to the Canyon Ranch spa, which my wife and I both wanted. She started into an explanation of what is included in the resort package and how much it costs (it would have been a total of $240 for the two of us), when she looked down again at the sandwich (still sitting on the counter) and I could tell she suddenly realized that it was $50 and not $20. Her tone suddenly changed, and she quickly mentioned that she thought she could include some of the amenities in the resort package. She went to the back and returned with two spa passes, two admissions to the wax museum, $15 slot credit and two $20 coupons for Palazzo/Venetian restaurants. I figured I would press my luck and explained that my wife and I were looking for spa passes for each of us for three days so we were hoping to get six passes total. She said no problem and returned with all six. So, in the end, for a $50 tip we received an upgraded room, $240 worth of spa passes, two museum admissions, $40 in restaurant coupons (which we used) and $15 in slot credits.

Tipped:  $0 Upgraded to  luxury view suite  from  Luxury suite

Arrived at Palazzo in the evening &, approached clerk(I was directed to next available clerk, but clerks are spread far apart so nobody can hear conversation) and handed him $50 sandwich & said I would appreciate anything he could do to help me enjoy my 1 st stay at Palazzo. (stayed 4 nights so I figured $50 was worth any upgrade i got) His eyes lit up when he saw sandwich but he handed it back to me and said he couldn’t take it cuz it would be considered a bribe but he would do all he could to make my stay more enjoyable.

After we tossed the $50 back and forth a couple of times, I finally just held the $50 in my hand & told him to just take care of what he needs to do and we would talk afterwards just to calm him down.

After he was done typing he told me I would be very happy with my room and then he also told me a comped fridge was on the way up as well.. We then exchanged the $50 in a handshake and I went about my way.

I ended up with a luxury view suite ($160 more for 4 nights at time of booking) with a PERFECT strip view and a comped fridge.($10 more per night) I had a view of the palazzo and Venitian pools below and was able to watch the Treasure Island Pirate show from my room. The fridge comes in handy because hotel charges so much for bottled water. There is a walgreens between Palazzo and venitian where I went and stocked up and saved a bunch more.

Tipped:  $20 Upgraded to  Bella View Suite  from  Bella Suite

Arrived at 6:00pm on a Thursday. After 5 minutes in line I was directed to the desk and greeted by a young, female clerk. Gave her a $25 sandwich and stated that I’d be grateful if she could do anything to make my stay more comfortable. She asked if I’d like change…told her “no thanks”. After two minutes on her computer she gave me a room on the 38th floor with a view of the strip, while adhering to the low-floor/bad-view rate.
