Tipped:  $20 Upgraded to  Strip View Room  from  Resort Room

Check in Mid Feb, Monday Afternoon. Honestly probably the slowest time of the year. Did the $20 sandwich and made sure he knew we were only here for 1 day. Asked for a upgrade to 24/25th floor and was no go. Best given was 18th floor with strip view. Honestly, probably would have gotten the same room just by asking.

Saved:  $700 Tipped:  $50 Upgraded to  Hospitality (2 Bedroom) Suite  from  Tower (2 Bedroom) Suite

It was about 5 pm on a Monday. when my group and I checked in. We wanted to speak to the only male behind the desk because he just had the look that made us assume he would be down for the trick. Luckily the manager walked away right before we were up. Got through the formalities and he asked for my ID and CC. I sandwiched a $50 bill and asked if there were any complimentary upgrades available. He looked up the reservation and seemed a little surprised and verified that we already had a 2 bedroom suite. He thought we wanted a villa which appeared to be out of his reach. I told him we were hoping for an upgrade to the hospitality suite. He made some calls and made it happen. The space we had was awesome! That room parties were even better!

Tipped:  $20 Upgraded to  Unsure  from  Resort Room

Dec 26th evening check in. I had a comp’d night thanks to my Pearl status. Buddy was with me. I slipped $20 in with my CC and ID. I asked if there were any high floors or pool/strip view rooms. Clerk was a young man, but I forgot his name. Very friendly service, but a little awkward about physically handling the $20. Did not have any upgrades available, but he could give get a king room with a strip view. Since I had my buddy with me, I decided to stick to a room with two queens. Unfortunately nothing else available for us, so we got a room on the 11th or 12th floor, north wing, facing Trump tower and the desert mountains. Clerk awkwardly thanked me for and kept the $20 tip when he gave me my room keys. Oh well…

Tipped:  $20 Upgraded to  Resort Tower  from  Resort Room

There were about four couples ahead of us in line for checking in. Our assigned clerk was a younger person (maybe early 20s). While handing over my ID, $20, and credit card I said, “I know we booked a premium view room, but I was wondering if there were any complimentary upgrades available.” The clerk put us in a room on the 25th floor (those have larger bathrooms and use the elevators exclusively for the 24th/25th floors only). It might be important to also remember to speak to your clerk with friendliness and respect.

Tipped:  $20 Upgraded to  Resort Room  from  Resort Room

Didn’t target any particular clerk, got a young man. It was 10 pm on a Friday and not busy, whole place looked pretty empty. Asked if there were any complimentary upgrades, was only offered upgrades that cost extra, ended up with regular room on third floor. Total disappointment- this has worked in years past.

Tipped:  $20 Upgraded to  Unsure  from  Resort Tower

I dealt with a young female clerk. It was around 6pm, not too busy. I offered $20 with credit card and ID. I asked for help with any upgrades that would impress my wife. The desk agent politely left the cash on the counter and said she would consider a tip at the end of check-in if I found her service was worth it. This seemed very formal. I get the sense the front desk management is well aware of the $20 trick and told the agents how to handle it.
After a lot of discussion behind the desk (out of sight) the agent told me I could have a better view of the volcano and I’d be on the ‘club’ floor with private elevator. My original reservation was already on the 24/25 floor (that’s what Resort Tower is, which I booked). It seemed to me I *possibly* got a volcano view for $20. Or I got the same room that I would have been in regardless of the tip. Hard to tell.
I answered ‘unsure’ to upgrade question because this result could go either way.

Tipped:  $30 Upgraded to  Tower King (24th/25th floor)  from  Standard

We arrived at the Mirage around 4pm (after Southwest helpfully lost our luggage) and got in the short check-in line. This was going to be my first time trying “sandwich” trick, so I was a bit nervous.

I approached the clerk with $30 tucked between my ID and credit card, and politely asked if they had any rooms available on the 24th/25th floor (all rooms are king, non-smoking and there is an express elevator that only goes to floors 24/25).

She grabbed the “sandwich”, and immediately started punching on the keyboard and placing some phone calls (I counted 3 phone calls total). After around 5-6 minutes, she announced that they DID, in fact, have an upgrade available, and our room would be on the 25th floor. SCORE!

It was certainly easier than I thought, and I will most definitely be tipping on check-in again!

Tipped:  $20 Upgraded to    from  Resort King Room

Arrived in on a red eye flight, several of the front desk clerks were busy, so we walked up to the only available one, K. We tried the $20 sandwich trick with K, and was informed that they’re basically at capacity. I get my room keys, id, along with the $20 bill back. We were then informed that it’ll be a double queen, but they’ll hold us a king the following day.

The room we got wasn’t cleaned properly, so we spoke to the manager who was very helpful and he at least put us in for the King bed that we paid for, and a $100 credit for all the inconvience.

Tipped:  $20 Upgraded to  No Upgrade  from  Resort King

Checked in around 5 PM on a fairly slow Wednesday for a 2-night stay. The rate was very low for Mirage, so it had to be a fairly show couple of days. I handed the clerk the sandwich and asked for an upgrade, and she immediately left the $20 on the counter and said none were available without even checking. Sounds like management might be cracking down on clerks giving these upgrades.

Tipped:  $0 Upgraded to  Higher floor with view  from  Standard

Checked in for my third time at the Mirage, previous 2 worked getting me an upgrade, so I expected once again.. Gave the famous $20 sandwich and nicely asked if any complimentary upgrades were available for a tower deluxe room (if possible facing the pool). The clerk did her thing and told me none were available, but still managed to get me a room facing the pool (strip) and on the 22nd floor which was nice. So still an upgrade for me and was given my $20 back.
