Tipped:  $40 Upgraded to  Hollywood Suite  from  Standard Grand Tower

Asked the wife to stand away from checkin, checkn girl noticed my cc/passport and $40. Asked for the price of an upgrade telling them it was a surprise holiday to me from my wife and I wanted to surprise her with a better room. She went and talked to the checkin manager and came back with 2 options, either a free upgrade to a bungalow suite or $28 for a hollywood suite. Went for the $28, she then asked if the $40 was towards paying for the room “no its for you for making our stay much nicer” I said. So she reduced the room to $20pn. Success in my book.

Tipped:  $50 Upgraded to  marquee suite!!!!!11  from  standard king size

couldn’t realyl select a clerk as it was all v busy.

we’d booked our room through travel agent, but at check in i put $50 in passport.

the lady spotted it and said ‘oops! woould want you to loose your money there sir’….
i asked if she had any complimentary room upgrades, and siad we’re celebrating a 40th birthday, and had a terrible journey etc (which was actually true).

she spent ages on the computer, and didn’t seem very happy, so i didn’t think it woudl work.

she took out a fodler, and flicked through to show us the marquee suite, which was massive (own living room, two king rooms, spa bath, 28th floor, 1400 sq feet!!), but siad ther would be an addintoal small charge.

it worked out an extra $75 per person… which i was very happy with. It took ages to process though and she had to check with her manager.

the poeple behind started toget a bit shrty coz it was taking so long…. but i thought hey what ever this is an awsome room and i really don’t care.

she gave the money back with pass[ports and room key, i then said ‘you’ve been very helpful,m can i tip you for your excellent service?’ she said yes and happily took the money.

the room was awsome, such a result!! 🙂

Tipped:  $20 Upgraded to  NONE!  from  2 queen beds

New guy at desk, there looked to be 4 people checking people in, with 2 managers training them, thought what the hell, and gave it a try anyhow!

He didnt see the $$ till the end, but it was pretty funny. I asked “do you have any comp upgrades” and he looks at the manager and asks if they do, and she says “we never do” . yeah right, im not stupid!!

he sees the $$ at the very end and doesnt even realize or act like he realizes what is going on, pretty funny.

so nothing, but balls out, i gave it a good try and will try this trick in the future again!!!

Tipped:  $20 Upgraded to  higher level with strip view standard room  from  Standard room

I checked in at the airport and there were 2 females working at the front desk, an asian girl and a caucasian female. I got the caucasian female and she was very nice and when she saw the 20$ she just typed away. Although she was not able to upgrade us to a suite, she did give us a higher floor room with strip view and also returned the 20$ as well.

Tipped:  $20 Upgraded to  High Floor and View  from  Deluxe 2 Queen Room

The young woman clerk at first seemed taken aback by the 20$ bill sandwiched between card and ID. She left it on the counter in plain view and said “I will keep this here for a bit” I asked if there were any fabulous upgrades available, she checked and said no suites but a high floor and view…I said great! and she swept the folded 20 into her hand and quickly completed the rest of the transaction.

Tipped:  $20 Upgraded to  Celebrity Spa Suite  from  MGM West Wing

Arrived at the hotel around 3:30 pm on a Thursday afternoon. All of the check-in lines were 4-5 people deep. Couldn’t help but hear all of the chaos and confusion with everyone in front of us trying to check-in. It seemed no ones reservations were correct. When I finally reached the counter, I was greeted by the desk clerk who was in his early 20’s. He was very friendly and we began to chit- chat about his day. My reservation was correct but I proceeded to ask him if there were any upgrades available as I handed him my ID and credit card with my folded $20. There wasn’t any complimentary upgrades but he got a book out that listed all of their rooms/suites and proceeded to tell me what I could upgrade to for a small, nightly fee. I had booked my 5 night stay for under $200 so I did not mind paying an additional $100-$150 for a Celebrity Spa Suite. Those rooms are very nice. The bathroom itself is almost as large as the entire West Wing room. I was very pleased even though I didn’t get it for free. I still only paid about $70/night, tax included. The entire check-in process was about an hour but ended up being worth it to me.

Tipped:  $20 Upgraded to  n/a  from  standard room

As i rolled into the lobby around 2pm on a Friday afternoon, i was observing the possible clerks that would be able to hook me up. Since i’m asian, i figure a fellow asian guy would be able to help me out. the guy was in his mid 20’s. As i sandwiched the $20, he takes both DL and CC and leaves the $20 on the counter near his keyboard. I asked him if there were any complementary upgrades. He straight said “no, we dont offer complementary upgrades”. I’m thinking in my head, WTF! After he hands up the keys, he takes the money leaves. Oh man, i was furious that, it didnt go my way, and in addition he didn’t give me back my $20. i wanted to jump behind the counter and knock him out but held my composure. I was thinking of talking to a general mananger but i’m sure it will be my word verse his so i didnt bother. Now i see why MGM was rated a 50% of getting upgraded. Horrible!

Tipped:  $40 Upgraded to    from  Grand Tower Room

Checked in around 3-4PM on a Sunday. Booked 2 rooms so I decided to tip $40. Walked up to a young female clerk. She asked for my ID and credit card. I handed it to her and asked if there were any complementary upgrades. She saw the $40 and started typing away. About a minute passes and she told me that they were low on the suites so she couldn’t offer it complimentary. I asked her if there was anything she could do such as a higher floor with better view. She gave me a room on the 26th/28 floor with a south-west strip view. She handed me my money back. Didn’t get an upgrade but wasn’t expecting much from MGM.

Tipped:  $20 Upgraded to  Grand Tower Room with strip view  from  Grand Tower Room

As I was checking in, I did the $20 sandwich and asked if any complimentary upgrades were available. I was already receiving my 3 night stay comped, but wanted to see if I could get it upgraded. Right away as soon as the clerk saw the $20 he thanked me and apologized for not being able to take the tip. He explained to me that he greatly appreciated the tip, but they have policies at MGM where they are not allowed to accept tips at registration. I did manage to get a strip view though.
