Tipped:  $30 Upgraded to  900 sq feet suite  from  Classic 2 beds room

I was at the Hard Rock for 4 nights and gave a 30$ to the girl at the frontdesk. She gave me a big suite instead of a classic 2 beds room. My friends tried too and got a view upgrade. Nice stay!

Tipped:  $20 Upgraded to  N/A  from  HRH Tower City View

Booked a room in the newest all-suite HRH tower for a very busy weekend in Vegas (St. Patrick’s day, college spring break, first weekend of March Madness). Checked in around 4 PM on Friday. Handed the clerk the sandwich and asked for any complimentary upgrades. Clerk searched pretty hard but couldn’t come up with much. She did offer a suite in the Casino Tower, but the standard HRH rooms are nicer, so I stuck with what I had. Clerk kept the $20. This has worked before for me in the Casino and Paradise towers, but in the HRH tower there just isn’t much you can get upgraded to, especially on a busy weekend. Still had a great room though!

Tipped:  $20 Upgraded to  Deluxe Suite, Pool View  from  Standard King, Pool View

Checking in on a Sunday gave me confidence with this. I think your chances of getting an upgrade are way better on weekdays, or when there are no major events in town. I had a two night stay COMPED to me from the hotel. I didn’t target a specific clerk. I handed the clerk the “sandwich” around 5pm while having a friendly chat with her. I didn’t mention an upgrade at all. She did some typing and handed us our room keys. I wasn’t sure if it worked until we opened the door to see we were in a two-room suite, complete with a spa tub, two 50″ TVs, a large shower, wet bar, couch, dining table, etc. It was the best $20 I spent during the entire trip. I will do it again and again.

Tipped:  $20 Upgraded to  Casino Tower Standard King Pool View  from  Casino Tower Standard King

There was a line when checking in around 1pm. There were about 4 or 5 clerks at the time. We waited and got called up to the first available clerk. They had one main line for everyone so you don’t really pick which clerk to stand in line for. Just went up to the clerk with the sandwich handed it to her said I had a reservation and asked if there were any complimentary upgrades available. She took the 20 bill and placed it to the side of the keyboard and went to work. It wasn’t a huge upgrade but we did get it for 3 nights so it wasn’t that big of an expense. The other view we would have had would have been rooftop. Since we were staying 3 night at first she said she wouldn’t be able to upgrade us for all 3 but then we said it would be a pain to have to move and she kept checking and then was able to get us the upgraded room.

The other option she gave us would have been on the 10th (of 11) floor but didn’t have one ready that was the king bed we were looking for. Instead it was a 2 queen room. Having the 5th room floor that we had gave us a closer view of the pool but being up higher would have given us a better view of all three pools instead of just the one we could see on our side. Partial view of the strip also on that side of the hotel.

Tipped:  $20 Upgraded to  Actually Got Downgraded  from  HRH Suite

Very nice looking asian clerk. Booked a suite in HRH tower, asked if they had any upgrades available. Gave the sandwich, her eyes lit up and she said YES, we were booked for a mountain view but they had a pool view suite. Got to the room, IN THE CASINO TOWER NOT HRH LIKE WE BOOKED. Smelled like puke and smoke and there was a drunk passed out in the hallway, went back down, clerk had already left.. What a surprise. Asked for the original room we booked.. SOLD OUT.. WTF.. Could not do anything for us. Called casino host, refused to do anything.. Told him I’ll take my 100/hand blackjack somewhere else, which I had already played for over 4 hours there prior to checking in. He said he was sorry he could not do anything. We checked out immediately and went to a MGM property (ARIA) where they always have a room open for me. Called casino host, got free deluxe room, checked in (at ARIA) and gave another sandwich.. Bingo, upgraded to strip view jr. suite.. I’ll never visit the HRH again.

Tipped:  $20 Upgraded to  Supreme Double Queen Suite  from  Supreme Double Queen Suite

Came in early and was worried about being able to check in (existing check in time was around 3PM). Slipped the $20 bill in between my ID and credit card to the man behind the desk at about 11AM and asked him if there was anything he could do to help us out. He immediately found a corner room (nearly 100 sq. ft. larger) on the top floor and asked no questions. Definitely saved us some anxiety.

Tipped:  $50 Upgraded to  Paradise Towers - 14th floor  from  standard room

Line for check-in was not too long. Waited about 10-15 minutes behind two very drunk girls – was worried one of them was going to loose their load at any minute or crash to the floor. The woman who checked us in was very nice between 25-30. Slipped her the $50 between my license and credit card and asked if there were any comps available. She smiled, said thank you and she’d see what she could do. I don’t think we got anything special.

I was glad we got a room in the paradise tower – the room was really nice and a good size. We were 10 or so rooms down from the hotel. We had a mountain view room that also included the roof of the parking garage – thankfully we were up about 8 floors so it didn’t impact our view. No comps for dinner, drinks, gambling, shows or the spa.

Overall we had a good time. Next time I’d probably save the $50 and tip a server or host. Live & Learn – glad I gave it a shot. May have worked if it weren’t a holiday weekend.

Tipped:  $20 Upgraded to  HRH tower  from  Standard

Went to vegas mid March. Went up to the counter with the sandwich trick. The girl checking me in was surprised and said “what is this for?” I gave her the line and she more than happily upgraded me. Only problem is she gave me one bed when we needed two. It was a simple fix and were put in a room with two beds. SUCCESS!

Tipped:  $20 Upgraded to  Paradise Tower--Pool View Corner  from  Paradise Tower--Mountain View

Checked in around 4 PM on Sunday for 3 nights. Went to first available clerk. Handed clerk the sandwich and asked for any complimentary upgrades. She swiftly pocketed the money and worked at getting me an upgrade. She came up with a corner room (windows on the south and east sides of the room with views of the pool and mountains) on the top floor of the paradise tower. Not a huge upgrade, but definitely worth the $20, as pool view rooms are at least $20 more per night. The trick works again!
