Tipped:  $20 Upgraded to  go room 23rd floor  from  basic deluxe

Arrived 10 am. long line. sizing up the clerks the only one i did not want to get was older man that looked very crabby. had already prepared my $20 sandwich. was called over by a nice lady in her early 40s. made some pleasant conversation and told her how excited we were to be in Las Vegas. i got the friendly smile i was waiting for and then asked if there were any comp upgrades-and handing her my sandwich. she smiled and it worked so well i can not wait to try this again! by the way………..the crabby guy i told you about……………my hunch was right on the money. when i went to check out he commented (in a not so nice tone) that we had gotten quite a free upgrade and did not have to pay for it. then adding that our whole hotel bill would not have even covered our up grade alone. avoid the crab! had a wonderful time. beautiful room with a fantastic view of Bellagio fountains and the Eiffel Tower. great pool. wildlife habitat. in the middle of the strip.

Tipped:  $20 Upgraded to  none  from  Deluxe

They did not need payment since I had already pre-paid through a booking agent but he did ask for ID, and I had the CC out anyway so I sandwiched the $20 bill and said my line. The $20 fell out as he handed the CC back to me. He placed the $20 by his keyboard and said “Oh! Thank you!” He then stated that the place was booked full, but he’d check again. So he appeard to be checking on the computer for an option but then apoligetically told be there were no upgrades available and placed the 20 back on the counter. He then gave me directions to my room. We said goodbye and I thanked him for his customer service. Afterwards, I felt like perhaps I should have at least tipped him a few dollars for giving me the $20 back. (I guess I assumed I’d had given it to him regardless of if I could get an upgrade, and was glad to get it back)

Tipped:  $20 Upgraded to  Mini Suite  from  Deluxe

I have used the sandwich trick in the past and always got a minor upgrade. This time I waited in line and didn’t target anyone. The a couple clerks opened up at the same time and the person in front of me grabed one of em. Then a guest from a differnt line started throwing a fit cuz they felt they were next in line from the rewards short line. Well she fussed and stormed off. I got the lady that was trying to help her. We laughed at the situation. I handed her my sandwich with a 20 as a tip and asked politely if there were any complimentry upgrades available as my buddy and I were in town for his bachelor party. BINGO. went from a deluxe room to a mini-suite on the 12th floor overlooking the pools and gardens!

Tipped:  $20 Upgraded to  Go Room  from  Deluxe Room

The hotel was pretty packed, had to wait in line about 20 minutes (I arrived around 3:30…the line stayed busy my whole stay). I was unable to target a specific clerk, and I even had an irate gentlemanthree people in front of me (this made me nervous). When it was my turn, I had the sandwich ready, though my license fell, so the lady only got the credit card and money originally. She was very nice, asked how i was and my name which i gave her then immediately asked if any complimentary upgrades were available. She quickly put the money on the counter and said, “Let’s see what we can do for you.” I made small talk about how busy the hotel was, asked if it was due to the ACM Awards being in town. She said no, they were at 98-100% capacity for 2 weeks prior and preceding my visit. I was not encouraged to get an upgrade when she said this, but she was able to upgrade me to a GO room and seemed happy to do so! I thanked her, where she quickly gave me a very gracious “No, thank you!” so I assume she was glad to help me since I was generous to her.

Tipped:  $20 Upgraded to  2 Bedroom, 3 bathroom suite. Top floor, strip view  from  Cheapest room possible

I didn’t target any certain clerk. It was about 7pm on a Saturday night. And all we did to get upgraded was slip them a $50 (because we had 2 rooms and there was 4 of us) “is there any chance we could get a 2 bedroom suite?” And it seemed like we weren’t going to and that we were only going to get conjoining rooms with a possible strip view and when she told us that we were on the top floor we started to get excited. We got to the room and opened the first set of doors because we got 2 sets of key cards so that is also why we thought we just got regular rooms. Well when we opened the door to the connected room, it wasn’t another bedroom. It was the livingroom/dining/wet bar, with an extra bathroom! Then another bedroom was connected at the other side! It was so awesome, we met some people on the plane that we planned to party with so our room ended up being the pre-gaming spot! It was so worth the extra money for 4 awesome nights! Cheap room price for the best view in Las Vegas!

Tipped:  $20 Upgraded to  Flamingo GO Room Strip View  from  Flamingo Delux Room

We did not target any particular clerk we just went to the first available one. We checked in aroung 1:00 p.m. Vegas time. When the clerk asked for my credit card and ID as I was handing it to her I kindly asked if she could please check and see if there were any complimentary room upgrades available. She layed my CC & ID on the counter, raised up my ID (ever so slightly) when she seen the $20 in between she said she would be happy to look. After a couple of minutes of searching she asked if we had a preference. All I told her was that a strip view would be wonderful. after a few more key strokes she stated that she was able to move us from the delux to a strip view GO Room on the 20th floor. I kndly thanked her she slid the $20 out handed back my CC, DL and all of our paper work and room keys, told us the room was available right away and to please enjoy our stay. We had a wonderful time and our room was one of the better we have ever in in all of our trip to Vegas. Thanks for the wonderful advice on your web-site!! It worked!!!

Tipped:  $20 Upgraded to  Go  from  Standard

I found out about the sandwich technique two days before my trip to Vegas and decided to try it out. I discussed it with my mother, and she was down as well. We arrived at the Flamingo around 1130am and only had to wait about 20 minutes in line. We weren’t able to pick our clerk, however, ended up with a 60+ lady who seemed like she was in a good mood. I had the sandwich ready in my hand when we approached, and my mom warmed her up with a big smile and saying that we were celebrating her 50th birthday (which was true). She asked for the ID and credit card, and my mom handed over the sandwich, smiled, and asked if she had any “complimentary room upgrades.” A bit surprised, the clerk took the sandwich and said those magic words, “let me see what I can do.” After a few seconds, she lowered her tone and said “Alright, I’ve got you in one of our newly remodeled rooms with a view of the strip.” JACKPOT! The rest is history, and we enjoyed a nice strip view from the 16th floor in a NEWLY (and I stress NEWLY…the mattresses were manufactured this month!) remodeled room at the Flamingo! Thanks FrontDeskTip!

Tipped:  $20 Upgraded to    from  Deluxe Room

I read conflicting reports about the Deluxe Room so I decided to try the $20 trick and see what I could get. After offering the $20 bill, the clerk declined to take it and said that they are unable to upgrade me outside of the system. He did offer to upgrade me to a Go Room for $30 a night or a Fab Luxury Room for $15 a night. I took the Fab Luxury Room; which, by the way, was just okay – not great.

Tipped:  $20 Upgraded to  Fab luxury  from  standard delux

This around 9:30 am. There were lots of people in line checking out. An older man, salt and pepper hair, came from the back to help with the line when it was my turn. I had the “sandwich” ready, I handed it to him, he set it down in one motion, I waited a second or two, and he peaked under my licence (which was on top) saw the $20 and just began typing. after about 20 seconds he says “ok let me see what I can do for you..”. He waived the early check in fee, check in was not until 3:00, and we were upgraded to a Fab Delux on the 25th floor.
