Tipped:  $20 Upgraded to  Newly renovated with huge plasma tv  from  Standard

I reserved a standard room on the Excalibur website. When I checked in around 9 pm I handed the clerk my credit card and id with the $20.00 between. I asked for a complimentary upgrade and she said “Let me see what I can do.” She came back and stated that she could upgrade me to a newly renovated room, with a plasma tv on a higher floor with a great view. She also gave me coupons for a free buffet, $25.00 off of a spa treatment and some other food coupons. I was staying at the Excalibur for 5 nights and the $20.00 tip was worth the price.

Tipped:  $20 Upgraded to  Jacuzzi Room  from  Tower Room

My girlfriend and I booked a tower room at the Excalibur through a travel agent for 5 nights starting on August 18, 2007. We arrived at the hotel at around 10pm after a late flight, and was checked-in by a male clerk in his 30’s. He DID NOT look too friendly, but I gave it a shot anyways, slipping a 20 between my ID and credit card. I asked if he had any complimentary upgrades. At first, he gave me this iffy look and kind of shook his head. But then he saw the $20. He then nodded and said “let’s see what we can do”. I ended up getting a jacuzzi room in Tower 2!

Tipped:  $20 Upgraded to  Widescreen room  from  Standard room

Checked-in around 10pm with a middle aged, slightly foreign woman. Said I was checking in, and she asked for ID. I had it ready, but fished in my pocket like I was finding it. In the meantime she asked for my name, which I gave, and then handed over $20 between the ID and CC. I asked if there were any complimentary upgrades available. She seemed uncertain as she was typing, but said she would check. She then picked up my ID to enter it in, and saw the 20. A slow smile crept across her face and she said “Oh! Thank you!”. Doing my homework I knew that new rooms all had widescreens in them, so I said “Maybe something with a nice tv or something.” She nodded and finished her typing, handing me keys. She then oddly lifted the bill up to head level in the open and thanked me several times.

Tipped:  $20 Upgraded to  Could've had refurbished room but declined  from  Standard

Unfortunately the $20 trick failed to get me upgraded to a room with a Jacuzzi. The front desk clerk, Lisa, a rather attractive blonde, maybe 30ish, was very professional and knew the drill inside and out. She kept the $20 semi-obscured behind the counter but where I could still see it. She typed for a few minutes but could not find a room with a Jacuzzi. She did offer to give me of the hotel’s refurbished rooms with widescreen TV instead but I told her I didn’t care about the size of the room, the view, the décor, the distance from the elevator or the TV, just the Jacuzzi. She was a little disappointed but handed back the $20.

Tipped:  $20 Upgraded to    from  Basic Room

Got in around 9:30pm and checked in. Tried the $20 between credit card and ID. Asked for any possible complementary upgrade. She smiled and said she would see what she could do. Asked her also to put the rest of the party that was arriving on the same floor in the same tower, she said no problem. There was no upgrade, and the rest of the people that showed up didn’t tip got a nicer room, and in the other tower!

Tipped:  $20 Upgraded to  nothing  from  regular

Walked up and was friendly with the clerk. She asked my name and I told her and handed her my cc and id with the 20.00 between them and asked if they had any complimentary upgrades. She said that I could upgrade to the remodeled room for another $30.00 per night. I said no thanks. She turned to her manager and said, “No upgrades, right?” The manager said, “No.”
I will try again next time.

Tipped:  $20 Upgraded to  Remodeled Widescreen Room  from  Standard Room

The remodeled rooms have a 42 inch LCD, better bathrooms, alarm clock with ipod dock and better view.

Did the trick on a clerk wearing a black jacket. Not sure if he was a manager or not. Check-in was pretty busy as well but no one noticed what I was trying except the clerk. Put in a $20 between my CC and ID and casually slid it over and asked if there were any comp upgrades. The clerk did some checking and hooked it up.

Tipped:  $20 Upgraded to  Widescreen view (excellent view btw)  from  Strip view

I slid a 20 between my ID and CC and asked for an upgrade. She said “you guys are gonna love me I have one available for you and thank you”. I dont know for sure if it was the 20 or the fact that it was my gf’s 21st birthday that day and my birthday was 2 days later. Never the less she was polite and funny and deserved a tip. I ended up getting the entire 5 days comped anyways!
