I tried out the $20 tip trick and I guess it sort of worked but not really. So I handed the lady (angry looking lady I believe she was asian, avoid her if possible) my id, credit card and $20 bill. I then asked if they had any complimentary upgrades as it was my girlfriends 21st birthday. She said she would look into it. She talked to the manager came back typed in some stuff and said they could upgrade us to a room with a view, no wide screen room, no jacuzzi room just a room with a view. Then she proceeded to say that they could upgrade us to a wide screen room for $20 a night or a jacuzzi room for $30. I ended up paying the extra for the jacuzzi room. Then after it was all said and done she asked whats the $20 for and she didnt even smile when I told it was for her. Oh well I will still try again if I ever go back
My first time trying the $20 trick and it worked like a charm. Gonna try it every time from now on.
I followed the procedure exactly and it worked perfect. I asked if there were any complimentary upgrades right as she saw the $20 and she smiled and said “I think so…” She slipped the 20 under the keyboard as she tapped away. She told us about the room we would have gotten versus the upgraded room were were now going to get. Started off the trip on a high note and well worth it.

This trip was for my fiance and me to get married. We also took our 5 year old daughter to be in the wedding. And like all little girls she wanted to stay in the castle. We usually stay at the Mirage. Upon checking in I used a $50 and told her we were there to get married and that my daughter looked so forward to staying in the castle. I asked about any complimentary upgrades and she said there was nothing she would do for me. Also she wouldn’t let me check in using a debit card. I avoided credit due to being a true Dave Ramsey fan. I had to offer to leave a 2000.00 deposit to cover any phone calls we might make. Where am I gonna call that would cost 2000.00? Besides like most people we have cell phones. Needless to say I would never stay there again. The staff is very rude. Oh I did get my $50 back.
The Front desk staff had no clue. She asked what the $20 was for. “I guess nothing”.
No upgrade for me.
Gave the $20 sandwich. First she checked and said ti would be $20 per mite extra for the upgrade. I said – oh is that the best you can do?? She spoke to the manager and told us she would waive the $20 per night fee. Very nice room!!
Arrived at hotel around 2ish. There was no line so was able to check in straight away. We started the check in process as normal until she asked for my credit card and ID. I place a 20 in between the 2 and ask if there were any complimentary upgrades available. She said she would have to ask her manager. After returning she said that they do not do comp upgrades and that the best she could offer was a refurb room for $30 extra a night. Being prepared to upgrade to this room anyway I agreed but played my last card which was that it was my girlfriends 21st birthday. The woman didn’t seem impressed of my persistence however she claimed that it was also her birthday. She gave me back my $20 and place one invoice to the side and created what I can only assume was a new one.
RESULT: upgrade from standard king room to a wide screen king view room for Free!.
Checked-in during the middle of the afternoon rush around 3:30pm on a holiday weekend (MLK Saturday). Clerk took $20, looked for an available room, and offered my an upgraded room with a view. only catch was that the bathroom was accessible, meaning rails along the wall, and no tub, just a larger stand-up shower. actually worked out better with larger space.
Checked in around 9pm at VIP services. Asked for a comp upgrade and the clerk asked if it was my birthday, told him it wasn’t and I just wanted a nice tv. He told me it was full till I placed the 20 on the table, he took another look and got me into a room with the plasma tv and a view.
To answer the person below, I don’t think it matters if the original stay is a comp. I was staying on a 3 night comp.
