Basically me and a friend checked into the Excalibur at around probably 10:30pm. I told my friend to watch what I do with his $20. So I waited in line which didn’t take very long. The clerk happened to be a young male between the ages of 25-30. With the $20 sandwiched between my ID and credit card, I simply asked, “Do you have any complimentary upgrades available?”
The clerk looked both ways and when I saw him put the $20 in his pocket, I knew I had scored. I went from the cheapest room (Tower Room) to a room with a 40″ widescreen and a great view of the strip overlooking the strip with the New York New York and MGM Grand Hotels in plain sight.
I was a little nervous as I approached the front desk at Excalibur but once I saw the young woman who would be checking me in I was immediately at ease. Young female, professional, smiling, pleasant. It was about 9pm on a Monday evening so it wasn’t terribly busy.
She asked my name, and after telling her I immediately displayed my credit/$20/ID sandwich while asking if any complimentary upgrades were available.
The young woman smiled and asked me to place my money on the counter and offered me a room with a view in the Royal Tower and on a higher floor.
I hope anyone traveling to Vegas comes across this site and realizes that this is how Vegas works. Tip friendly, be friendly, and have some manners. It makes a big difference in how you’re treated.
Of course like most people, I expected to be too chicken to do this. But ended up doing it anyway.
It was for a four day visit with my son. I have been in Vegas many times, but at 37, it was his first visit to Vegas. I explained to him that I just might try “the sandwich”.
When we arrived at the front desk getting the first available clerk, I thought what the heck, I’m going to try it. So, I put a folded up twenty under my credit card and slid it towards the clerk. While I did that, I asked if there was a complimentary upgrade available. The clerk glanced at the credit card, noticing the money underneath it and said “I’ll see what I can do”. I looked at my son and he looked at me, rolled his eyes and when we looked back at the credit card, the money was gone. Just slightly sticking out from under the keyboard. After some searching, the clerk came up with a room that turned out be perfect. A higher floor (24) with a strip view, large screen TV, a sitting area in the room and a granite counter top in the bathroom. Couldn’t have asked for more. This was on a Saturday night with a giant thing happening at the Tropicana, right across the Boulevard!
I gave the $20 but they didn’t have any upgrades, so…
She refunded my resort fees, free parking, and free early check in.
Came up on +$88!!
Went up to the first clerk available at 9:30 PM. Handed her my credit card and ID with a $20 bill in the middle, as soon as she saw it, I asked it there were any complimentary upgrades available, she nodded her head before I finished speaking and said I’ll take care of you. She asked me several questions and then hooked me up with a sweet view in an updated room. Also had my brother showing up the next day, informed her that we’d hoped they could be near us, she upgraded their room too to ensure there would be no problem putting them by us when they checked in! This trick is awesome… I was shocked it worked so well!
We arrived around 10pm. I decided to go to a female clerk in her early 20ties. Just before I got there another counter opend up and a young guy (also in his early 20ties) waved me over. I gave him my reservation printout and when asked handed over my driver’s license and credit card. I prepared the sandwhich before walking up to the counter. While handing over the sandwhich I asked if they had any complimentary upgrades available. He asked me what I had in mind and I told him that a widescreen room would be nice (thought it was too much to ask for a suite). He nodded and started checking his computer. After a minute I got a widescreen room with a strip view. I will definatly try this again next time!
We checked into the Excalibur for 10 days, while in line we were directed to go to a lovely desk clerk who was a woman in her late 30’s perhaps early 40’s. After some small talk I proceeded to pass her the sandwich and ask if there were any complimentary upgrades available. She smiled and said not to worry. We were given 2 upgraded rooms and the resort fee was waivered.
We checked in around noon, and got a very nice woman clerk. I greeted her and handed her my reservation confirmation e-mail after which is asked for my Credit Card and ID. I had the $20 bill sandwiched in between and kindly asked if there were any complimentary upgrades available as I handed it to her. She quickly smiled, and said she would see what she could find. We ended up with a beautiful newly renovated deluxe room, with a poolside view and an extended check-out time! =) Definitely worth it, and will be trying it again next time.
I arrived late night Friday, i was thinking of the sandwich trick all day!! So i said, im gonna do it, i have nothing to lose! I get to the counter and i get a really nice young man, first thing i do is give him my cc&dl, he sees the money and smiles at me!!! of course im nervouse when i say if he has complimentary upgrade! he responce let me see what i can do!!! 2 minutes later i got an upgrade!!!!!!! 24th floor with a 42″ plasma tv with a view to the strip!!!! We checked in at about 9pm and went to the first available clerk. I did the ol’ sandwich trick and bingo!! The clerk looked at the moola, and quickly upgraded us to a nice room with a strip view….Thank you front desk tip, you made my stay a heck of a lot better!
