Saved:  $probably around $500 Tipped:  $20 Upgraded to  Lanai Suite  from  Terrace Studio

Gave the 20 sandwiched between license and credit card. Clerk asked if I needed change. I replied that it was for checking if there were any upgrades and that we were celebrating wedding anniversary. Clerk indicated that they can only take tips and they will check and we are free to take tip back if we want. Clerk checked around and found a great upgrade for us – newly renovated Terrace Suite Fountain view.

Saved:  $NONE - out $20 Tipped:  $20 Upgraded to  Terrance One Bedroom - Fountain View  from  Terrance One Bedroom - Fountain View

Arrived around 430pm for checkin on Sunday June 23, 2019. No option to pick a clerk, just had to take thee next available clerk. He seemed pleasant, young man so we went for it.
Sandwiched the $20 and asked if any complimentary upgrades or bonuses were available. Said he’d be happy to check. We had booked a Terrace one bedroom fountain view which was already a decent level room, not many categories above this and honestly this is the room type we wanted for the view, etc but figured we see how this went and what we may be able to get. He did some typing, made a phone call, the whole deal. came back that at this time there weren’t any room upgrades, but he could make sure we got a high floor, and that he’d apply a $75 credit for food/beverage to our account. This was great, a win to spend $20 on the tip for $75 in credit. All was well and we had a great stay. Upon checkout though there was no $75 credit on our account. Tried to get this rectified at checkout, but to no avail….agent and manager said simply they don’t provide complimentary upgrades, or credits. Its not something that would have been done…and as I had no paperwork confirming this I was out of luck…and of course that clerk was off the day we checked out. So a great stay ended on a very sour note. Ended up getting nothing for the $20 tip except some anger and frustration.

Saved:  $Negative $50 Tipped:  $50 Upgraded to  City Room  from  City Room

Marriott Titanium Elite member (top tier status) and used the Autograph Lounge for check in. Was hoping for a 2 bedroom suite or a fountain terrace at the very least. Tried a $50 sandwich and the agent was super awkward about it. Kinda just ignored it at first, then I asked if any upgrades were available. She made a call and gave me an offer to upgrade to a fountain room for $45 a night or a 2 bed suite for $150/night. Pass. Kept the money as well. Horrible service throughout the stay as well, and later asked a manager for an upgrade due to elite status, they basically told me to pound sand. Very disappointing as the hotel was at low occupancy and rates were very low anyways.

Saved:  $Allegedly $600+ Tipped:  $50 Upgraded to  Terrance One Bedroom - Fountain View  from  Terrace Studio - Fountain View

This was the first time I was doing the whole “ask for complementary upgrade” thing, and seeing that it was Valentine’s Day weekend. I wasn’t expecting much. But to my surprise after I placed the $50 on the table she called the back a couple times but said they couldn’t do a one bedroom and I understood. But after another longer call she offered me an “Angled Suite with a Fountain View” with a minor upgrade fee of $35 per night so “she wouldn’t get in trouble”. She said that for Valentine’s day weekend that room was retailing for $600+ even though they don’t advertise it. It had two bathrooms and a Japanese Soaking tub with a fountain view, which was really why I wanted the one bedroom. It was probably one of the nicest stays and views I’ve ever had so event tipping $50 and spending $35 extra per night was well worth it!

Saved:  $About 1400 for both rooms considering original third party rates vs Cosmo rates of the upgraded rooms Tipped:  $50 Upgraded to  Unsure  from  Terrace Studio

I had two terrace studios (no fountain view), https://www.cosmopolitanlasvegas.com/accommodation/terrace-studio, booked for Sunday April 2nd til Thursday April 6th. Didn’t target anyone in particular at the check in, got a short Asian guy, gave him a 50 dollar sandwich (two rooms and plus, it’s the Cosmo). He put the 50 on the counter where everyone could see it and said he’d leave that there while he checked what he could do. Didn’t take him over a minute to offer a complimentary upgrade to a Terrace One Bedroom (no fountain view), https://www.cosmopolitanlasvegas.com/accommodation/terrace-one-bed. However, for my room I wanted a fountain view, and he offered me a Terrace Suite, https://www.cosmopolitanlasvegas.com/accommodation/terrace-suite, for 85 extra a night. Took it. He also offered a wraparound terrace fountain view, https://www.cosmopolitanlasvegas.com/accommodation/wraparound-terrace-suite-premium, for 140 extra a night (total, not on top of the other 85), but that seemed a bit too much, plus I was only looking for the view not so much the space or other ammenities. Overall, very happy with both the complimentary and paid upgrades for both rooms. The complimentary upgrade didn’t have too much of a price difference (at least if you booked direct with Cosmopolitan), but the suite should’ve been at least 200 extra a night. Also, we had booked the original terrace studios through a third party at a very discounted rate, at least a 30% discount from what I can see. The sandwich works at the Cosmo!

Didn’t target a clerk. The lines were too long.

It was at 3pm. I didn’t even say anything. Just handed the worker $20 and voila! Got a Terrace One Bedroom with Fountain View. Absolutely amazing

Saved:  $500 Tipped:  $20 Upgraded to  Lanai Suite  from  Terrace One Bedroom

I checked in around 7pm on a Tuesday night for a one night stay at the Cosmopolitan Las Vegas. I used the $20 dollar trick with a mid thirties female clerk. She put the $20 on the counter and told me she would see what she could do. She made a call to her manager and ended up upgrading us to the Lanai Suite which is one of the best hotel rooms in the Cosmopolitan! It is a loft style room with it’s own private outside area with a hot tub! I couldn’t believe our luck and thanked the clerk along with giving another $20.

Saved:  $1200 Tipped:  $20 Upgraded to  Two Bedroom City Suite  from  City Room

We arrived at midnight with 3 adults and 2 kids. There were only 3 front desk attendants. I put the $20 dollar tip between ID and visa. The lady was very polite and put the money besides her computer and asked if we wanted change? I said slowly with my poor English if “I could get a free room upgrade?” She said she will see what she can do. She then called someone and was able to get us a room with two bedrooms, a living room and two washing rooms! The rooms had 2 queen beds and one king bed and she added a free crib so everyone could have a bed, which was fantastic! It’s our first time to las Vegas and it’s such a wonderful room. Thank you for the kindly lady and this helpful website! Good luck everyone!

Tipped:  $20 Upgraded to  Terrance One Bedroom - Fountain View  from  Terrance One Bedroom - Fountain View

Checked in around 12:30 PM on Monday, and there was no queue . Couldn’t target a specific clerk, so we got a young and sweet lady. I went forward asking if it would be possible to get a complimentary upgrade, and she mentioned that the room we have is already quite nice, but she’ll still check for us. After checking, she told us that unfortunately there weren’t any complimentary rooms available, but we could spend $85 per night to get a terrace suite fountain view upgrade. We didn’t find that really appealing, so we stayed with our one bed room without paying the tip. However, the room we got was on the 58th floor at the Chelsea tower and had a stunning view of both the Bellagio fountains and Eiffel Tower! By the way, a couple next to us seemed to have got an upgrade with $50. Super awkward when our clerk told us that there weren’t any complimentary upgrades while the other clerk next to her was putting his $50 tip in his pocket.

If you are visiting Las Vegas and are staying at the Cosmopolitan Las Vegas Hotel and Casino, we think it’s worth trying the $20 dollar sandwich trick. When checking into your Cosmopolitan room, put $20 dollars between your ID and credit card and ask the clerk if there are any complimentary upgrades available. At many of the Las Vegas hotels you can get upgrades to suites!
