We know that hotel room prices are always higher during holidays, conventions and major events. Likewise, hotel room prices are always less expensive during the middle of an average week. The only way to combat the higher prices is to plan early and get a lower price on hotel rooms or just avoid the busy periods entirely.

Here are some dates in the first half of 2016 to keep your eye on. These major events will cause higher hotel room prices, but you can save money by booking in advance or avoiding these dates altogether.

New Year’s Eve Weekend (December 31 – January 3)
New Year’s Eve is the busiest time of year in Las Vegas and always the most expensive. This year New Year’s Eve segues into the weekend so you should expect a few more expensive nights as the new year kicks off.

Consumer Electronics Show aka CES (January 6 – January 9)
In a city of conventions, CES is the largest of the year in Las Vegas. There will be hundreds of thousands of attendees and exhibitioners in for the convention. Hotel rooms will sell out and fine dining restaurants will be full of convention guests wining and dining. Be prepared for a surprisingly busy Las Vegas.

Super Bowl Weekend (February 5 – February 7)
This has long been the busiest weekend for sports fans in Las Vegas. People come from all over the world to watch and wager on The Big Game. Hotels will all be busy and there will be viewing parties in bars, restaurants, ballrooms and pretty much anywhere you can fit a television.

NASCAR Weekend (March 4 – March 6)
Over 100,000 people will attend NASCAR weekend in Las Vegas. Most of those enjoying the race and events leading into the race will be tourists. Race fans tend to roll in packs so keep an eye on NASCAR promotions and head there for fun or head the other way to save money.

First weekend of March Madness (March 17 – March 20)
This weekend now rivals the Super Bowl as the busiest sports weekend in Las Vegas. Hotel rooms will be close to capacity for much of the 4 day weekend. The first weekend of March Madness also falls during spring break and Saint Patrick’s Day this year so you can expect a little more chaos.

Las Vegas Arena Opening (April 6)
Las Vegas Arena will open with a concert featuring The Killers and Wayne Newton. A sold out concert of 20,000 people isn’t enough to fill all of the hotel rooms in Las Vegas but this specific event will affect prices in certain hotels. The arena is 50% owned by MGM Resorts and you should expect MGM and their partners in the new venue to have all of their VIP customers in town for the opening. Specifically, MGM Resorts hotels will be busier than normal.

Memorial Day Weekend (May 27 – May 30)
This marks the beginning of the summer and is one of the busiest travel weekends of the year no matter where you visit. MDW marks the beginning of pool season in Las Vegas and all of the dayclubs and nightclubs will be sure to have the best talent. If you’re looking to save money during this weekend book early and/or look off the Vegas Strip.

Independence Day Weekend (July 1 – July 4)
This is another traditional time for Americans to take a vacation. July 4 lands on a Monday so expect plenty of people to use this as an excuse to take a longer weekend than normal. Family holidays like Memorial Day and Independence Day are often the most crowded times in Las Vegas. This makes finding an inexpensive hotel room a challenge.

UFC 200 (July 9)
This night will be the culmination of UFC International Fight Week which normally isn’t much of a concern when booking hotel rooms in Las Vegas. This year will be different as UFC 200 will feature the rematch of Ronda Rousey and Holly Holm. Rousey is easily the most popular UFC fighter and will be a huge draw on top of the people already attending Fight Week. The fight will take place at Las Vegas Arena so look to the north end of the Vegas Strip for lower hotel room rates.
